Penelitian manusia purba di Indonesia itu di mulai pada akhir abad ke 19 M, yang dipelopori oleh Eugene Dubois yaitu seorang ahli palaeoantropologi dari Belanda. Eugene Dubois memulai penelitiannya di Pulau Sumatera bagian barat, namun penelitiannya tidak menghasilkan sesuatu. Selanjutnya ia memindahkan penelitiannya ke Pulaua Jawa. Pada tahun 1890 Dubois berhasil menemukan fosil atap tengkorak manusia di Trinil, tepi Sungai Bengawan Solo, Ngawi, Jawa Timur. Fosil tersebut di beri nama Pithecanthropus Erectus, yang berasal dari bahasa Yunani, yaitu ‘Fitkhos” yang artinya adalah kera dan “anthropus” yang artinya manusia (manusia kera yang berjalan tegak). Temuan Pithecanthropus Erectus menjadi fosil manusia purba pertama yang ditemukan di Indonesia.

Dengan demikian, Pithecanthropus Erectus ditemukan di Trinil, tepi Sungai Bengawan Solo, Ngawi, Jawa Timur.
